I photographed this big hover today. Is it an Arctophila superbiens?

Another lovely hoverfly! Yes your ID is correct. Could you post details as usual - grid ref, date, habitat, location name.

Thanks

Thanks Nigel!

RECORD

Name of the species: Arctophila superbiens

Date of the observation: 13/08/2009

Grid reference: NT452638

Location name: Keith Bridge

Vice-county: East Lothian

Recorder's name: Sandy Rae

Determiner's name: Nigel Jones

Other information: Individual only one of it's species noted amongst large numbers of hoverflies and other insects feeding on groups of roadside sowthistles. At one point it got into a scrap of pushing and kicking with a bumblebee - which was very funny! Appeared to use its front legs to help in feeding.

Thanks ever so much Sandy

The recording scheme much appreciates data and A. superbiens is quite scarce at the moment so records of this species particularly welcome.

Kindest regards

Roger

I'm just back from visiting a few sites in the Humbie area and I managed a reasonable haul of hoverfly records. I'll organise these and post them later.
I managed to find at least four Arctophila superbiens at three sites. My first sighting was near Keith Bridge and upstream from there there's a rough meadow used for grazing which has boggy and wet areas. I believe this species needs water-filled hoofprints to breed? Am I right? If so then this meadow may be ideal breeding habitat.
