Episyrphus balteatus (DeGeer). The double bar on the tergites makes it very distinctive but recently I seem to have seen quite a few atypical specimens, often very dark.

Many thanks Tony, as you will have realised I am new to Hoverflies and am trying to get the hang of this fascinating group of insects.
How's life in Northants? I used to work at Chipping Warden so know the area well.

Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your response. Oddly enough I "did" the old Chpping Warden airfield last year and it was quite interesting - and the Pocket Park at Aston-le-Walls is superb. In short, there are some very good sites hereabouts and I've a lot to do to cover them all.

Best wishes, Tony
