Hoverfly
Hover-fly
Hover fly

Which term is strictly correct?

I always use the first term. And the recording scheme does too, so I'd vote for that.

I note that Michael Chinery used Hover-flies in his 'A Field Guide to the Insects of Britain and Northern Europe' (Collins 1972) whilst Subbs & Falk, from the title anyway, - my copy still hasn't arrived! - use Hoverflies. Has there been a change in recent times or is it just a matter of personal taste?

Regards,
-Mark

I guess it's down to personal preference. Hoverflies is ever-so slightly quicker to type than hover-flies so that's a good enough reason to use the former for me Wink
