This is a Syrphus - the bars are upward turned and although you cannot see them there are hairs on the sqaemae

Thanks Roger,
The postman tried to deliver my copy of Stubbs & Falk today - but I was out! I will pick it up from the sorting office on Friday.

Hi Mark,
It won't be possible to say which species of Syrphus from this view. You need to be able to see the colour of the hind femora. _________________ Nigel Jones

Thanks Nigel,
I'm picking up my copy of Stubbs & Falk tomorrow - so I guess that takes care of my weekend!

It's a cracking book. Now you can spend the whole autumn and winter "hoverfly break" salivating over the marvellous hovers you can try to find next season. I well remember the excitement I felt on opening the book and leafing through its pages some twenty five years ago. _________________ Nigel Jones

Got the volume in my grubby little mitts!
Certainly looks to be the book that all those with an interest in hoverflies should own. The keys look relatively straightforward and I like the way that it appears to be written, as far as possible, for the layman.
As luck would have it, the sun decided to shine today and the hoverflies invaded my garden in numbers. Got loads of photos to go through but with the help of Stubbs & Falk I think I had a better idea as to what I should be photographing.
Onwards and upwards, many thanks for your continuing support.
Regards,
