In case it's of any interest as a record, I photographed a Didea fasciata in my garden, feeding on Ivy flowers last autumn.

5th September 2009 near Box, Wiltshire, southwest UK. (see http://www.diptera.info/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=7&thread_id=28676) for pics.

Some online sources suggest it's quite rare in the UK and typical of ancient woodland, but it was happily feeding on ivy flowers in my garden... in a rural not an urban setting. This site suggests it is more widespread and less choosy about habitat.

That's a cracking photo showing the chevron markings of D. fasciata brilliantly.

Many thanks Nigel. It posed nicely in good light, enjoying the nectar.... the ivy flowers were really drawing in hordes of syrphids and as that post mentioned a very nice conopid as well!
