Were its eyes hairy or not? and did it have a dipped vein R4+5? It seems most likely to be Eupeodes sp, but also consider Scaeva & Dasysyrphus. I'm afraid more detailed notes/photos of critical features are needed.

I must admit that with the whitish markings, and that they do appear to be sloping slightly further back at the margin, I would have been thinking of S. pyrastri.
These have been reported to be common at the moment. I certainly have been seeing them on a daily basis in my garden. |
