hoverfly migration?

hey i live in thorrington essex and this morning when we look acroos our feild there where hundreds of hoverflys flying towards the pit ( the bottom of our garden).

do they migrate is so where do they go?


any help will be really appreciated! xxxx Very Happy

Hi, Yes they do migrate and there certainly appears to be biggish migration taking place currently. They just keep moving west, east, north and south in search of places that are not already overun with millions of other hoverflies. In th eUK the movement is largely west and north (I imagine) with many flies coming from the continent.

Lots of Migrant Diptera and Lepidoptera today in Beccles VC25.

best insect day this year

Gazillions of Syrphus vitripennis and ribesii about this week. Also a good variety of other Syrphids in amongst the huge mass of Syrphus - Scaeva pyrastri, Eupodes luniger E. corollae, E latifasciatus, Episyrphus balteatus etc. Very Happy

Conopid's observations are very much in line with my own. There have also been Humming-bird Hawkmoths on the wing here in west Northants, all presumably making use of the advantageous conditions.
