Species account from Provisional atlas of British hoverflies, Ball & Morris, 2000.

Cheilosia albipila Meigen, 1838

Biology: The larvae are stem miners usually in Cirsium palustre and Carduus. Overwinters as a puparium. Adults are usually found visiting early spring-flowering shrubs such as Salix and Crataegus, in the vicinity of wet grassy places where the larval food plant occurs, often in woodland or scrub. The edges of damp, grassy tracks or rides in woods are typical localities, where males can be found hovering near flowering shrubs

Distribution: This species is widespread throughout Britain, and probably under-recorded, because of its very early flight period. Searching for larvae in thistle stems is probably the best way to establish its presence at a site
