Species account from Provisional atlas of British hoverflies, Ball & Morris, 2000.
Eristalis abusivus Collin, 1931
Biology: The larvae are of the ‘long-tailed’, aquatic type, and are associated with wet, decaying organic matter such as that around ponds. It has been found at the edge of a pond on moorland (Smith, 1989). Adults are usually seen visiting flowers around the edges of scrub, hedges and tall vegetation near the larval habitat
Distribution: Widely distributed throughout Britain, but more frequent near the coast, this may be the most abundant Eristalis in some coastal wetlands. It may easily be overlooked amongst other small eristalines, and care with identification is required |
