Spotted a female hornet mimic hoverfly today. It sat on the window frame for about four hours......just long enough for me to identify it! We are situated in Birmingham, that seems pretty far north for it to occur

Hi

Your postcode would be useful to create a record - you can send as a private message to me.

V. zonaria has travelled a long way past Birmingham in recent years and has reached The Wirral and Hull, but records do tend to be much sparser in the wet.

Regards

Roger

Hi
I've just joined to report a sighting of volucella zonaria in my back garden in Hall Green, Birmingham (B28 postcode) sitting on a paper recycling box. Have never seen one before and rushed inside to my reference books - I'm sure it is this species from the description and it was huge with beautiful clear markings! It also sat still just long enough to get a good close look but flew off into next doors garden just as I reached for my camera (typical!) are ther any other species it could have been? I understand it is unusual to see them this far north? I will keep an eye out for it and try and be faster with the camera next time!
Ruth
