Species account from Provisional atlas of British hoverflies, Ball & Morris, 2000.
Platycheirus splendidus Rotheray, 1998
Biology: Newly described by Rotheray (1998). Bred from larvae collected from leaf-curl galls of Schizoneura ulmi on Ulmus glabra and also Brachycaudus sp. on Silene dioca. Adults closely resembles P. scutatus with which it was previously confused. Rotheray found that larvae enter diapause (unlike P. scutatus) not forming a puparium until the following spring and the few records of adults available so far support this, suggesting it has a short flight period early in the season
Distribution: Rotheray (1998) examined material under the name of P. scutatus in several museum collections and found specimens from all over Britain which proved to be this species, suggesting it will turn out to be frequent and widespread. Several specimens came from city parks in Edinburgh and Oxford |
