I was given a Volucella zonaria (found dead on a window) from some friends that live near Bedford. They know I ID insects, but I'm a Ground Beetle person, I have keyed in Stubbs to ID, but I would normally get a confirmer before submitting this as a record.

1. Considering that this is quite easy to key, would the record be excepted from me, just a lowly GB keyer?

2. Is there an expert near Bedford that would like to confirm this specimen? I am in Suffolk, but the "custodians" would like to put the hover on display for kids, I will mount and label the specimen once it's a bit more "relaxed"!

I only ask this because I guess this record from that area may be interesting to someone tracking this hover. The "custodians" are probably not too willing to travel to get this confirmed.

Thanks,
Neil.

Thanks Neil. I am the Hoverfly Recorder for the Bedfordshire Natural History Society. If you or your friends near Bedford would like to e-mail me at the address below, I will be happy to discuss details, and I can submit the record to the national recording scheme in due course. 2010 is looking like it will be a very good year for Volucella zonaria in the county, with plenty of records already, and more to be expected - if and when the rain stops!
All the best,
John
