Species account from Provisional atlas of British hoverflies, Ball & Morris, 2000.

Melangyna umbellatarum (Fabricius, 1787) Syrphus umbellatarum Fabricius in Coe (1953)

Biology: The larvae are aphidophagous, and appear to have a clear preference for Cavariella aphids on white umbells. Adults are usually found in or near woodland, especially on the flowers of Heracleum and Angelica. Males hover high over paths and clearings. Speight (1998) states that this species is associated with wet woodland: “forest streams with Salix; Salix carr; beside streams and rivers fringed with Salix

Distribution: Scarce in the southern half of Britain, rare in northern England, but extending into central Scotland. This species can be confused with M. compositarum and M. labiatarum and is very difficult to separate from M. ericarum, so care is needed
