Species account from Provisional atlas of British hoverflies, Ball & Morris, 2000.

Lejogaster tarsata (Megerle in Meigen, 1822) Lejogaster splendida (Meigen) in Stubbs & Falk (1983)

Biology: Larvae are aquatic and have been found amongst floating, decaying vegetation in a pond. Adults are most often found in or near coastal marshes, for example at the fringes of mildly brackish ditches, or in the transition zone between fresh and saline water in coastal flushes. They visit flowers, especially white umbels and Ranunculus

Distribution: Although this is mainly a coastal species in Britain there are confirmed inland records, but confusion with L. metallina makes the distribution difficult to assess. It appears to be a scarce species generally, but can be abundant at some localities

Datasheet from the Review of Scarce and Threatened Diptera, Falk (1991).

LEJOGASTER SPLENDIDA (Meigen) NOTABLE

DISTRIBUTION Mainly recorded from coastal regions in southern Britain from North Wales to Suffolk and with a few Scottish records (sites in Westerness, Skye and Aberdeenshire). Also occasionally occurring inland at sites in Berkshire, Cambridgeshire and at a loch in South Aberdeenshire (Loch Kinord, Dinnet NNR).

HABITAT Coastal brackish and tidal marshes in estuaries or otherwise are preferred sites but non-brackish sites such as fens and marshes are sometimes inhabited. On the west coast of Scotland it is associated with Iris seepage marsh fringe along the shores of sea lochs.

ECOLOGY Larvae are said to have been reared from the decaying vegetation of a floating mat of Typha and other plants in an old pond. Adults recorded from May to August.

STATUS A very local, mainly coastal species with about 25 known post 1960 sites.

THREAT The destruction of coastal marshes through drainage for agriculture; the spread of coastal development; complete or extensive clearance of marginal vegetation from water edges; pollution such as agricultural run-off; mis-management of water levels with a loss of breeding sites and subsequent scrub invasion.

MANAGEMENT On inland sites maintain a high stable water level and employ rotational ditch management on grazing levels and marshes if necessary to ensure all successional stages are present every year.
