Species account from Provisional atlas of British hoverflies, Ball & Morris, 2000.
Dasysyrphus friuliensis (van der Goot, 1960)
Biology: The larvae are aphid-feeding and overwinter in leaf litter on the forest floor. Adults have most often been found in rides, or near the edges of coniferous plantations where they visit flowers such as white umbels and Ranunculus. In Europe it is considered to be associated with Picea forests and plantations
Distribution: This species was first recorded in Britain in 1979 from Yorkshire, and has subsequently been found in a number of localities in central and southern Wales and north and central England. It has also been taken in Malaise traps in Oxfordshire. It is thought to be a recent colonist of conifer plantations, and is likely to be found more widely in future |
