Hi,
I started recording hoverflies last year after buying this website's authors excellent book.
I have recorded over 20 species in our garden on Mull and i have tried to identify them. I added them to irecord but none have so far been checked or verified.
I have also blogged about them here. http://treshnishbirdlog.co.uk/?p=1938/
I am hoping to use this forum to help identify or at least get closer to a correct identification.
It might not be the wisest thing to start with one which doesn't appear to be a hoverfly but is the one annoying me right now.
I don't think it can be a wasp as the antennae are too short and the head looks more like a hoverfly.
These are all of same individual

This one is i think a Cheilosia species and it doesn't appear to have hairy eyes. The flower is Common Mouse-ear

Your first specimen is a Sphegina - I would say S. sibirica. The second is a Cheilosia but I cannot take it further. Please can you supply the grid reference and date so this can be turned into a record
