Going through some photos I've found some I need help with.
The first are Epistrophes, a genus which I'm unsure about separating the various species. |

The first is a Scaeva but is it selenitica or pyrastri? and why?
The second individual looks like a Cheilosia illustrata whose hair has fallen out. Or is it something completely different?
Many thanks in advance,
Sandy |

Hi Sandy
The first looks like pyrastri to me, as the lunules are white, not yellow, and do not hook round so far foward on the outside.
You will want to wait for more expert comment, though.
Have enjoyed the Dutch vernacular references!

Hello Sandy
Your first three are Epistrophe grossulariae
The Scaeva is pyrastri and of course the last one is C. illustrata.
Data welcome

Thanks Ian & Roger
I need to swat up on Epistrophes and that was one scruffy "scruff".
I do need to study the two Scaeva species more closely. Thanks for the info.
Regards,
Sandy |
