Species account from Provisional atlas of British hoverflies, Ball & Morris, 2000.
Chalcosyrphus nemorum (Fabricius, 1805) Xylota nemorum Fabricius in Coe (1953), Xylotomima nemorum (Fabricius, 1805) in Kloet & Hincks (1976)
Biology: The larvae are found in runs and other accumulations of sap under the bark of water-sodden fallen trees or branches or in wet rot-holes. This species is generally found in wet, wooded situations, but adults can also occur on sunny vegetation at the edges of woods and along rides. They may be regular visitor to Ranunculus and other yellow flowers
Distribution: Although widespread in Britain, this species is very local everywhere and never seems to be found in abundance. It is more frequent in the south than elsewhere |
