At first viewing I thought "surely Eristalis pertinax", but it has dark front tarsi and I think I can detect a feint and narrow grey stripe across the dosal surface of the thorax, so I'd go with Myathropa florea, whch does vary a fair bit in brightness and darkness.

Thanks conopid. I have another image which shows the grey dorsal stripe a bit clearer.

An intriguing shot, and good detective work. I wonder if this is a case of mild teratogeny: the "pertinax" abdomen looks rather sharply "stepped". Odd colouration could of course be expected if that were the case.
Thanks both.
