I am a total novice and would like confirmation of the identification of the following species which I think is E. pertinax.
Thank you

Christine Johnson

Yes, Christine, your identification is correct, Eristalis pertinax. The first picture shows the characteristic pale front and middle feet, and the second shows the tapering, rather cone-shaped abdomen of a typical male pertinax.

You probably know that this is a common species throughout much of Britain and Ireland; but I would say that a record from South Uist is of more than average interest. Please could you send a few more details, including a named location and a six-figure grid reference?

Happy hunting!

John

Hello John
Thank you for the confirmation.
I have recorded this species at 2 locations:
Loch Druidibeg on 27/04/09 - NF798387
North Loch Eynort on 30/05/05 and 04/06/09 - NF790283

I have a couple of other species which I would like confirmed and I will post them later this week and include the details of the records.

Nothing unusual so far - but just getting started.
I have just purchased mapmate, so I will be submitting my records later in the year.

As a novice the help is greatly appreciated.

Christine
