Hi, I found this attractive beastie the other day and after googling possible species I found photos of similar flies labelled Eriozona syrphoides. Some though looked radically different which caused me to doubt the ID. Can anyone confirm it or suggest an alternative?

Thanks, Sandy

Looks good for Eriozona to me. A useful record for the scheme.
Roger, will you be taking a note of the details?

With pleasure. Smile

Name of the species: Eriozona syrphoides

Date of the observation: 09/08/2009

Grid reference: NT465636

Location name: Church Wood (next to Humbie Church), Humbie.

Vice-county: East Lothian

Recorder's name: Sandy Rae

Determiner's name: Nigel Jones

Other information: The site consisted of a wooded lane leaving a mixed age and type woodland, partly surrounded by arable farmland. There was just one individual feeding on knapweed (Centaurea) heads. Many other hoverflies also present mostly Episyrphus. The Eriozona dominated any flowerhead it visited but any time the Marmalades got 'pushy' it vibrated its wings to warn them off.
