Yesterday I was well chuffed to find my first Ferdinandea and I'm almost 100% sure it's an F. cuprea.
Could someone confirm it for me just in case I've got it wrong and it's really F. ruficornis.

Record details to follow.

Regards,
Sandy

The abdomen looks quite bronze, so yes this is almost certainly the lovely F cuprea. F ruficornis would be a very very good find!

Record

. Name of the species. Ferdinandea cuprea
Date of the observation. 07/09/2009
Grid reference. NT452638

Recorder's name. Sandy Rae
Determiner's name. Nigel Jones
Other information. Single female individual on flower head in patch of sowthistles (Sonchus species). Habitat: roadside wildflowers. Surrounding area: a stream in a small glen with mature trees, gorse-covered slopes, boggy pasture and arable fields. Other hoverflies present included Eristalis, Syrphus, Arctophila, Meliscaeva, Episyrphus and Platycheirus.

I visited three sites that day and recorded quite a few hoverflies. When I get a chance I'll put it all together and post the records.
