Hello
I have just joined the Hoverfly Recording Scheme and this is to start familiarizing myself with your procedures. Most of my submissions I would expect to come from a little nature reserve we have in in Nailsea, North Somerset. Here is the first hoverfly seen this year and I am tempted to identify it as Meliscaeva cinctella. I wonder if you can confirm that.

Hi Grant

Welcome to the forum!

Others will give you more detail, but to start you off...

Meliscaeva cinctella is a slimmer fly with yellow bands, rather than these rather rectangular bars. To me, it looks more like a Melangyna species. The time of year would hint at Melangyna lasiophthalma, but you would need to check hairiness of eyes and one or two other things, to be sure.

Hope that is of some help.

Ian

PS: Don't know what your weather is like, but I am itching for some calm, bright weather...the Sallows are beginning to blossom, but barely a hoverfly in sight, here! Sad

In Oxfordshire I have just caught and identified a male Melangyna compositarum/labiatarum from my garden, so they are obviously starting to appear.

Hello Grant

I am inclined to say M. lasiophthalma but add a word of caution that Melangyna cannot really be done from photos.

Do you have the date and grid ref please?

Regards

Roger
